Every Year as part of February’s Black History Month, Loyola Park puts on a Celebration at the Loyola Park Fieldhouse. This year’s event had close to 100 attendees and featured live music and dance performances, as well as a drumming lesson!

Chicago Public Schools featured Charles White this season and his work was exhibited at the Art Institute this year. Our event featured works by Charles White to tie in with school programming.

Students from local schools participate in the event and have the opportunity to showcase their work in a gallery setting. This years submissions came from these local schools:

Acero Schools, Cruz Campus. – Visual Art
Joseph Brennemann School – Visual Art
Gale Community Academy – Visual Art
Joyce Kilmer Elementary School – Visual Art
Mather High School – Visual Art
New Field Elementary- Visual Art
Nicholas Senn High School – Visual Art

Here is a gallery of photos from 2018 Black History Celebration featuring the poet Gwendolyn Brooks and local students showcasing their artwork.

Students from Loyola University Chicago’s Institute for Environmental Sustainability (IES) practiced field ecology sampling techniques in the Loyola Dunes on Sunday, September 10th.

Among other things, the dunes natural area serves important educational and scientific purposes as an outdoor classroom.  Some students measured plant species abundance and diversity inside 1-meter square frames called quadrats (white plastic piping) that were placed at intervals along a transect line.  Others used insect nets to sweep across the dunes vegetation and collect invertebrate samples.

Rogers Park has been thrilled to be a destination for live performances of Shakespeare by the Chicago Shakespeare Theater and looks forward to another season of splendor in the grass.

We venture to say that although Chicago has many beautiful parks, the Loyola Park performance has the best views of Lake Michigan!
